Many people use the term impotence to refer to erectile dysfunction, but these are not the same thing. Erectile dysfunction can be thought of as a mechanical issue, while impotence is more complex.
Erectile dysfunction is an inability to achieve or sustain an erection that is firm enough to engage in sexual intercourse. Impotence describes other problems with sexual function, including a lack of desire, inability to achieve orgasm, or issues with ejaculation.
Erectile dysfunction affects as many as 5% of men in their 40s and up to 25% of those over the age of 65. The condition can negatively impact intimacy, and seeking treatment is critical to your overall health and wellness, no matter your age.
Many factors can impede your ability to achieve or maintain an erection. It’s also important to note that having an occasional off night shouldn’t be cause for concern.
However, when erectile dysfunction is an ongoing problem, the cause may lie in one or more of the following:
The first step in treating erectile dysfunction is determining the cause. Your EVU Center urologist completes a thorough health history and physical examination before creating an individualized plan. Once that’s established, treatment options may include:
• Lifestyle Adjustments
This includes a review of current medications, weight issues, or other health concerns that may be contributing to ED.
• Pills or Compounds
For most men with ED whom lifestyle factors are not the cause, first-line treatment is pills, including Viagra™, Levitra™, Cialis™ and Stendra™. These are designed to improve blood flow to the penis, and with sexual stimulation, can help men achieve an erection.
• Vacuum erection devices
A mechanical ED is used to pull blood into the penis to achieve an erection. The system includes a plastic cylinder, an external penile pump and a tension band that’s place at the base of the penis.
• Penile Implant
A penile pump is a 3-part system that includes a reservoir placed in the abdomen and two fluid-filled cylinders completely concealed within the penis. Squeezing the pump in the scrotum can achieve an erection.
• Surgery
If an arterial blockage or another circulatory issue causes your problem, surgical procedures can restore proper blood flow. If stress or emotional turmoil is a contributing factor, your doctor can guide you toward counseling or other treatment options.
• Urogold100®
EVU Center is also the first practice in Arizona to offer the urogold100® treatment for erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease. This pain-free treatment uses low-energy shockwaves to promote your cells’ self-healing properties. That restores your penile nerves, your ability to get an erection, and your quality of life.
The urogold100 is a safe and effective noninvasive treatment without side effects and has successfully treated patients who haven’t responded to medications in the past.
