Men's Health Q & A

What specialized men’s health care does EVU offer?

At East Valley Urology (EVU) Center, the experienced doctors offer a wide range of men’s services to treat urologic health conditions, including:

  • Hydrocele
  • Vasectomy
  • Male infertility
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Prostate enlargement

What is a hydrocele?

A hydrocele is a collection of noncancerous fluid surrounding the testicles. Hydroceles may appear because of an injury or inflammation and require medical attention.

Symptoms of a hydrocele include swelling in one or both sides of the scrotum. Hydroceles are painless, but you may feel discomfort when the swelling increases. The size of the hydrocele can change through the course of a day, depending on your activities.

A physical exam confirms a hydroceles diagnosis. Serious cases may require the aspiration of fluid from your scrotum or surgery to remove the fluid.

What is Peyronie’s disease?

Peyronie’s disease causes painful, hard plaques to form underneath the skin near the curvature of your penis. This disease makes erections and intercourse painful and can cause bent erections.

In some cases, the disease resolves without treatment. If your doctor at EVU Center determines medical intervention is necessary, your course of treatment may include:

  • Surgery
  • Testosterone
  • Penile injections
  • Oral medications
  • Penile stretching therapy

What treatments are available for male infertility?

Infertility issues may be related to your overall health. Although the reasons for male infertility can be highly complex, possible causes include:

  • Genetics
  • Testicular diseases
  • A low sperm count
  • Abnormal sperm
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • A hormonal imbalance

When infertility occurs as a result of another health condition, the treatment may involve using one or more of the following:

  • Medication
  • In vitro fertilization
  • Intrauterine insemination
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection

The specifics of your health and family history help your doctor determine the best treatment option.

How is a vasectomy performed?

Dr. Rahul Mehan and Dr. Harpreet Wadhwa are highly experienced at performing vasectomies and boast thousands of successful procedures throughout their careers. Dr. Mehan even coined the “Snip City” moniker for the practice.

A vasectomy is a safe and easy surgical procedure that blocks off the tubes in the scrotum to prevent the release of sperm. A vasectomy is an incredibly effective form of birth control and the procedure only takes about 15 minutes to complete in a comfortable office environment.

Typically, Dr. Mehan or Dr. Wadhwa makes a small incision in your scrotum to perform the vasectomy. They use a long-lasting, locally acting pain medication to keep you comfortable following the surgery. It’s recommended that you restrict activity for 72 hours following the procedure.
